1:37 EarthstarPortal (2026)
The 1:37 Earth Star Portal is intended to provide an environment conducive to the evolution of consciousness. It is a combination of previous Portal designs: the 1:44 Alcyone Portal (2016) and the 1:44 Sky Portal (2024). It moves from the long time 1:44 location of the previous Portals a little further out to 1:37, which relates to the one of the most mysterious numbers in physics: the Fine Structure Constant 137. The renown physicist Richard Feynman wrote: ‘It’s one of the greatest damn mysteries of physics: a magic number that comes to us with no understanding by man. You might say the “hand of God” wrote that number.”
It consists of twenty-four plywood panels in a circle sitting on earth colored outdoor carpet. The 96” height is divided at the golden ratio, the lower 59” slopes outward at the 72º angle of the Sky Portal, but is painted earthen color of the Alcyone Portal and the upper 37” slopes inward at the 60º angle of the Alcyone Portal but is painted the sky blue of the Sky Portal. The lower panel facing east is missing as an entrance to the interior. The upper inward sloping panels frame the sky: our star the sun in the daytime, and the stars at night. Thus the name Earth Star Portal. There will be dim white LEDs the brightness of star around this opening and a few dispersed in the upper panel, making it blend with the night sky.
Additionally there will be the sound and vibrations of the low frequency non linear dynamic audio feedback device called the “Quasar Wave Transducer that has been featured in most of the Portal installations since 2004 contained within the wall.
A new and experimental addition is a noise cancelling sound system consisting of 4 to six subwoofers and full range speakers mounted around the perimeter that will act like noise cancelling headphones and pick up the ambient background sound of Burning Man play a phase cancelled signal to make the space inside the Portal a much quieter “Sonic Sanctuary”
